Does
our
unconscious
mind have parts?
Have you ever heard someone say, "A
part of me wants to travel, but another part of me can't be bothered."
Or, "It's like I have voices in my
head. One says, 'eat more' and the other says 'STOP!'"?
Or, "It's like I am one person at
work, and I turn into this other person at home."
Are these different parts of the mind?
In hypnosis we call these different
parts with different agendas 'Ego States'.
Working with Ego States in Hypnosis is
referred to as Ego State Therapy, a therapy which works with the
different parts of the mind that drive us to do, feel and achieve
things. This includes all things whether 'good' or 'bad', but then
that's up to your "judgemental part" to decide.
At the core of whether you achieve
your goals, stop smoking, eat right and exercise or make any change for
the better is the motivation behind these parts. If the part that wants
to stop smoking, for example, is in control, then you will. But if the
part that likes smoking takes over, you will begin to smoke, or that
part that likes to eat will make you eat etc. In order to change what
you do, in hypnosis, the various parts of the unconscious mind with
competing agendas can be convinced to work together. Then you will be
able to make the changes you wish to make. For example, if the part
that likes to binge eat decides in hypnosis that it won't any more,
then the binge eating ceases.
So, the next time you feel pulled in
different directions because of your inner mind, you might ask
yourself, "Are these different ego state trying to achieve different
things?"
